With It is a contextual menu plug-in for the Finder that adds the ability to open a document using an application other than the one that created the document. This is accomplished by presenting the user with a dialog containing a list of applications which can open the selected document.
To use the plug-in, place it in the Contextual Menu Items folder located inside your System folder, or drop it on your closed System folder icon. You will need to restart your computer before you can use the new plug-in. Once you have restarted your computer, from within the Finder you can hold down the control key while clicking on one or more selected documents and the plug-in will add an additional menu item ("Open With") to the contextual menu.
Features
With It will automatically remember what your favorite applications are for different types of documents. After the first time you open a document using With It, on subsequent displays of the contextual menu, the "Open With" menu item will change into a hierarchical menu, listing what your favorite applications are to open documents of the currently selected type. Up to five favorite applications can be listed in this hierarchical menu. In addition, via the "Application" menu item, you'll still be able to pick an application which isn't listed in the menu.
The "Show more" check box can be used to display additional applications in the application list. When the check box is off, applications which can open any type of document are excluded from the list, unless they also happen to open documents of the selected type as well. Also, duplicate applications on different file system volumes are removed. When the check box is on, those applications which can open any type of document are listed. Also, duplicate applications are listed, but with the name of the file system volume appended to their name so that you can distinguish between the duplicates.
With It can also make use of Internet Config (or File Exchange under Mac OS 8.5) to help determine which applications can open which types of documents. If a document is of an unknown type or is a text document, and it has a file extension, such as ".SIT", With It will use Internet Config to find a corresponding file type and creator for the file extension in its file mappings database.
How It Works
When the "Open With" contextual menu item is selected, it opens a dialog that lets you select from a list of applications which can open the selected document. If more than one document is selected, and all the documents have the same file type, then all the documents will be opened using the same application. If the selected documents have different file types, then the "Open With" menu item will not be displayed in the contextual menu.
The first time With It is used it will search your computer's hard disks looking for application related information. All this information is then stored in the With It preferences folder located in your computer's Preferences folder. With It uses this information to determine which applications can open the currently selected documents.
Options
To see additional options within the With It dialog, click on the triangle control next to the word "Options". This control is used to show and hide additional options. The additional options let you configure what types of devices With It will search when searching for application information.
Also, since your computer is a dynamic environment, you might be adding and removing applications at any point. If you feel that the application information that With It has stored in its preferences has become stale, you can click the "Search" button and With It will re-search your hard disks for the application information that it stores.
From the options area you can see what the current version number is and also enter your registration code.
